  • Employee: During the project discussion, I couldn’t get a word in edgewise.
  • Mentor: You can’t always wait for a pause/gap. When you want to speak up, give a signal - like a small gesture or a verbal cue.
  • Employee: Is it rude to interject/jump in?
  • Mentor: If you validate their point first and then say, ‘I’d like to add to that,’ it comes off as very professional.
  • Employee: Got it. What if I want to pivot the conversation?
  • Mentor: You can say, “Building on that point, I’d like to shift gears and talk about…”

Word Breakdown

  • Couldn’t get a word in edgewise:
  • Jump in / Interject: 插话。
  • Come off as:意思是“显得/给人的印象是”。
  • Pivot [‘pivet]:
  • Shift gears:
